Overview
GTA Online 2 (the community name for Rockstar’s confirmed next-generation multiplayer) is the standalone successor to GTA Online — the most lucrative entertainment product in history, which has generated billions of dollars since 2013. Rockstar has confirmed it will be a separate experience from the GTA 6 story, launching later.
Building on a Juggernaut
The original GTA Online outgrew GTA V to become a platform of its own — running for over a decade with constant updates, a player-driven economy, heists, businesses, and live events. Any successor carries enormous expectations: the same living-world multiplayer, but rebuilt for modern hardware and a vastly larger map.
A Separate Launch
Crucially, Rockstar is decoupling the multiplayer from the story launch. The single-player GTA 6 arrives November 19, 2026; GTA Online 2 follows on its own timeline. That lets the story stand on its own merits (a direct response to criticism that GTA V’s single-player was overshadowed) while giving multiplayer room to grow.
Why It Matters
For many players, GTA Online was GTA V for years. A purpose-built sequel could define the next decade of online gaming the way its predecessor defined the last one. The stakes — commercial and cultural — are unmatched.
Note: Rockstar has confirmed a new multiplayer but has not detailed its features, name, or release date. This entry tracks what’s official.
